FAQ’s

There are no doubt many questions that someone considering Hypnotherapy has about the process. And even if you have been recommended to use Hypnotherapy, either by one of my own clients or by any of those people who have already benefitted from it, it’s only natural for you to have your own questions. Here I will pose some regular questions that I get asked, and offer up some answers and if you feel you would like to discus any of these or ask your own questions, then please do get in touch.

Can Everyone Be Hypnotised ?

This is probably the most common question, and why it is at the top of the list here. The answer is yes – the only condition is that they have to want to experience it. I have heard people say” “you can’t Hypnotise me” and they are right. If they are in that frame of mind and really don’t want to be Hypnotised, then that is what will happen. Some people are more susceptible to Hypnosis in the early stages, but everyone can experience it.

What Is ‘Being In Hypnosis’ Like ?

During Hypnosis, you become deeply relaxed and calm. You are aware of as much of whats going on around you as you choose. It’s a bit like day dreaming, whereby your attention is focused internally on what is going on in your mind, rather than all the external signals being delivered by your other sensory systems. Some even describe it as being like that period of time before you drift off to sleep or just as you are waking up.

Is It Like Sleep ?

No, It is not like sleep. During Hypnosis, your awareness is heightened and very active, whilst your physical body settles and allows you to focus internally.

Am I Unconscious ?

Because we deal with the ‘Unconscious or Subconscious mind’ in Hypnotherapy, people often confuse this with the idea that they are therefore Unconscious. When people are unconscious, they have no external connection and there would be little point in the therapy if you were unable to listen to me and the hear the suggestions I direct towards your Unconscious Mind.

I’ve Seen Hypnosis on TV. Will I Do Silly Things ?

The good thing about Stage Hypnosis, is that it conveys to a wide audience how amazing the process is. Unfortunately, it instills some insecurities too. Those that choose to visit a stage performance of Hypnosis, do so with expectation and pre perceived ideas of what they will witness or take part in. Having fun and enjoying the show are both part of the viewers intention, and therefore their susceptibility to Hypnosis is high. As a therapeutic client, you will be treated with the upmost respect and confidentiality, knowing that the greater you perceive your treatment, the better it will be.

Is My Mind Being Controlled ?

It is important to recognise that at all times during Hypnotherapy, you are in control. As the therapist, I am just making suggestions and encouraging you to visualise and experience those things. Each of us has our own set of beliefs, ethics and values with which we function, which is why it is important for the therapist to tailor your treatment personally. You would not respond to ‘mind control’ suggestions, going against who you are.

Will I Know What Happens ?

Yes you will. During the session I will be talking to you and guiding you, and you will probably remember as much of this as you need to. It is important to know that you do not have to concentrate on every word I say during the session, just trust that the Unconscious part of your mind is picking everything up and understanding what it needs to. Sometimes the sessions will seem to be brief, when in fact, they have been quite lengthy.

How Many Sessions Will I Need ?

Everyone responds differently and it is possible that you may have results sooner than someone else. Due to the amount of work involved on my part, I have a minimum requirement of 4 sessions. For many people this is as much therapy as is required, others may choose to continue for a few extra sessions. We are all individuals and respond in the same manner – individually.

Do You Guarantee A Cure ?

As much as I would love to say yes here, we have to accept that nothing in life is guaranteed and whilst I have had amazing results, It would be unprofessional of me to say you will definitely have a 100% cure. I can however say, that I will work to the maximum of my capability with you, using all the skills and knowledge I have in the field of Hypnotherapy and NLP, to ensure that you have the best possible treatment and attention.

How Do I Know You Are The Right Therapist ?

If we put aside my extensive training, qualifications and professional memberships and just think about each other as individuals for a moment, it would be impossible to say for sure that you will feel totally comfortable with me as your therapist. It has not happened yet, but I have to accept that you may be looking for something in a therapist that I am not. For instance, I do not wear a suit and stare at you over the top of my glasses whilst chewing the top of a pencil. I believe that therapy should be relaxed and dare I say it – enjoyable! This you will pick up from my manner, which is why I offer an introductory session whereby we can discus any of your questions and what you are going to achieve with Hypnotherapy.

Is Hypnotherapy Available On The NHS ?

Sometimes. You will need to consult your GP and see if he can refer you.

Can Children Be Treated With Hypnotherapy ?

From the age of about 6 years, depending on the child in question and their attention span, children can be successfully treated. As I abide by a strict code of ethics laid down by the professional body, children are required to attend their sessions with a responsible adult. In some situations, it is preferred that the adult is not the child’s parent, as the presence of such an adult could influence the child’s responses. If you are considering Hypnotherapy for a child, please do get in touch to discuss this matter.
